about

This new work from the HCI collective began as a germ of a meditation retreat in the White Mountains in Vermont. Each note on the album has a specific meditative correspondent. The complex tuning patterns developed for use on this album are meant to be transient and were discarded immediately, never to be used deliberately again. Each piece has a meaning that will become apparent during dedicated listening, but the album can be enjoyed otherwise.

"The Hat City Intuitive is one of a small cadre of improvising groups emerging from the punk scene to explore links between '60s rock experiments, free improvisation, electronica and "out" jazz. Their absurdist rhetoric, song titles and stage names highlight the humor inherent in rocking without a net, but these tongue-in-cheek elements never mask the serious effort of maintaining a high level of energy and creativity while in free flight.

And if these frenetic live performances dance too close to their own destruction, at least this angst has a real world antecedent: "Hat City" is the civic nickname of the group's Danbury, Conn., base; one band member recalls evidence of "mad hatters disease" in a relative due to mercury poisoning.

While the group sometimes stumbles over awkward seams in their wandering inventions, most tracks simultaneously elevate and deconstruct themselves in gloriously disconcerting layers, revealing a blueprint for a dadaist rock critique of adventureless pop culture. Mellower cuts like "Byzantine Best" juxtapose electronic washes, flutes and world music percussion to create chiming mystical interludes of great beauty and wonder. The best pieces, like "Anaconda Non-Withstanding" or "Ornithopter," orchestrate clattering drums, alien electronics, squalling sax duels and savagely flowing guitar lines to a rising energy level within a seemingly chaotic structure, finding the excitement of infinite variety in an unpredictable environment."
